We have been a few times for lunch & a couple dinner meals. Food has always been good but you have to watch your steaks are cooked correctly, just like any other establishment. Wait staff is general good. Just hard to get extra good help any more, but they still should provide a good service. Even if they don't care. Lunch has specials. Sometimes different ones. Will return. Normally good time, good return & good food for the money. They are set up to accommodate handicap with no problems.

The Arrival: Friday, April 24, 2015 7:15pm I attended the Peerless with a friend and opted for the private dining rooms offered by the establishment. Upon arrival for a reservation (15 minutes before reservation time) we were required to wait 30 minutes (15 minutes after reservation time). Once being placed in a room we were immediately greeted by outdated peeling wallpaper with pressed copper ceiling tiles. The knockoff tiffany stained glass light provided an awkwardly dim downlight with a brighter than expected uplight. The Experience: After ordering drinks, the server brought back a holder that is best described as a sugar packet holder with saltine crackers and a plate containing an ice cream scoop of butter. Not what you would expect at a restaurant that is "famous" for its steak and seafood. We both ordered a sirloin steak. One medium, one medium rare. I opted for one of the "gourmet" butters that arrived before the meal. This butter was in a small pan that was placed over a tea light to melt. It was still cold when the food arrived. The server brought the steaks (which only include 1 side. Salad may be added for $5), placed on the table, and left the room. After cutting into these steaks (oddly shaped for sirloin), we learned that they were both prepare incorrectly. One was well done, the other medium well at best. 12-15 minutes elapsed before the server returned to check on us. At this point we requested new steaks prepared correctly. A mere 5 minutes later, new steaks were brought to the table. We requested the server to remain at the table until we cut into the new steaks. The steaks were prepared exactly as before. We informed the server that we did not want them recooked as we had already been at the table for over an hour and would eat the ones in front of us. Cutting into the steak was the most disappointing feeling ever felt. These steaks were exceptionally dry and masked by a broth poured over them after preparation. A taste led to the determination that we would pay our ticket and leave. The server returned but brought an unknown female with her. This person walked briskly into the room, ripped her glasses off, and exclaimed in a less than desirable tone "what's your problem." This tone set an understandably displeasing stage for the proceeding events. I informed the person, who at this point was assumed to be a manager, that the steaks were prepared incorrectly, left on the table for 15 minutes without being checked on, and prepared incorrectly for a second time. I expressed that we did not want them to be cooked for a third time and that we would eat the steak as it was. I explained that the wait was not acceptable but that we would continue with our meal, pay, and leave. The "manager" said "Obviously I don't know anything, I am just a substitute." She then pulled her glasses off again, turned her back to us, and said "what the hell ever. If you don't like it then leave." We took this opportunity to comply with her request and left the dining room. I stopped at the hostess stand to ask for a contact phone number or business car for the owner of the establishment and was directed to a card stand in the corner. While this conversation (a calm civil conversation) was occurring, the "manager" stormed from the back and yelled (in plain view of all employees and customers) "what's wrong? Can I help you anymore?" We stated that we were simply requesting additional contact information. This is the point at which things went downhill extremely quick. She exclaimed "You didn't even give us a chance!" to which I responded "We only requested a properly prepared steak." The return response "You aren't even good patrons!" "LEAVE! Get out now!" Of course, we proceeded to leave and attempt to contact the owner on his "cell phone" number that was provided to us.

I received an email advertising a hamburger, fries and a free draft beer for $9.99 all week from 4-6pm. So a group of us made reservations for 4:30pm on Monday 5/18. My friend was told by the reservationist that a certain room would be good for number of people. I went to the bar upon arriving and asked if there was a happy hour...No. Several in our party were having drinks. We were greeted and escorted to the room. After sitting down, the waitress asked about drink orders and someone asked about the hamburger special that included a beer. She had not heard anything about it and left the room. A second woman came in and said that sandwiches are not served in the private rooms and they could seat us elsewhere. We all had to get up and ended up in the lobby. We were the only customers in the restaurant and it was about 4:45pm. At this point it was suggested we go elsewhere and all agreed. The manager came to let us know they could now seat us...again! There were no other customers in the restaurant, which opens at 4pm, some of us had ordered drinks and would be ordering more, and now Peerless lost a party of 12! They lost our business yesterday and for many more times to come. There is no customer service here. And certainly they never heard the phrase...the customer is always right!.

It's steak in a 1970 setting. You won't be wowed but you won't hate it either. They try real hard and I will say the prime rib is good. However, the service is very inconsistent. It seems we're in the middle of training new servers every time we go. One of my big pet peeves is baked potatoes that have been sitting in a hot box...you'd think I'd learn.

My grandfather went to the original restaurant when it opened in the 1930s. My family has been going faithfully since that time. It is definitely iconic, but the place is quickly going downhill. Apparently, the place is now run by the son of the original owners. He needs to rethink the changes that are taking place. "If it isn't broken..."

My family has been dining at The Peerless since the fifties. It was always our special occasion place. My favorite is the filet. Always cooked perfectly and so tender. The Tomato Dill soup is spectacular. Love it when they run specials or its Jim's birthday so I can go more often.

The food is average at best. The steaks are ok but nothing to write home about. Average, average, average with above average prices.

Just got back from Johnson City TN. While I was there I was having an underwhelming food time which was not unexpected since Johnson City is very rural especially for this NJ/Miami boy. I'll say one thing though that Johnson City people are the friendliest and nicest people I have ever met. Not sure if all of TN is that way but my goodness people couldn't have been nicer, in fact the niceness level was a bit overwhelming, not used to it! So I had a good lunch at Cootie Brown's but dinner was a strikeout the prior night. By chance during conversation with Bob my cabbie who was a really nice guy also tells me if a want a great dinner then I have to go to Peerless. So I go to Peerless and I walk in and the Hostess makes me feel instantly at home she's so nice and friendly and is Very Lovely I might add. I sit down to have a scotch and I feel even more at home. Now I order dinner. But let me preface that with this. I gave Peerless 4 stars, I would have given it 5 stars but deducted 1 star for a technicality that I will explain later. I also want my fellow Yelpers to know that I adjust my food critic level according to where I am. Meaning that if I'm eating at a steakhouse in Johnson City TN I don't base my rating on how good it is compared to my meals at Peter Lugers in Brooklyn or Prime 112 in South Beach. That would be silly since I would have to rate every other steakhouse a 1 or 2 star which isn't fair to some small town restaurants like Peerless. You need to keep in mind that they may not have access to the high quality meats the big city guys do or that their customer base doesn't want to pay big city prices. Not fine tuning your critik scale isn't fair to other Yelpers who don't know the area and would otherwise pass on this really good restaurant because I'm giving it 1 or 2 stars cause it isn't up to Peter Luger standards. So with that said let me begin my dinner review. I start with the Tuna Sashimi which really wasn't Sashimi cause it was cooked. It was delicious non the less. It was just seared and very fresh. The wasabi could use a little more kick to it. Next I order the Greek Salad cause I read about the home made Greek Vinagrette. So I ask my waiter(another nice guy) what's in the Vinigrette and he tells me he has no idea cause it's a big secret and it's made in a special room that nobody is allowed into. So right away I get excited cause I love that type of stuff and secondly cause I make what is arguably the best Greek Salad Dressing on the Planet. So I tell him to bring me a salad with Vinagrette on the side just in case i don't like it. Out comes a salad and a wire rack with a vinegar bottle and an oil bottle in it. I look at him and say I wanted the Greek Salad with the secret vinaigrette on the side. He said to me that's what you got. I say WHERE? So he points to the salad and says that's the salad and then points to the vinegar and oil bottles and says that's the vinaigrette and then points to the can of Ballene Sea Salt sitting on the end of the table and said that's the salt to go with it. OK people of Johnson City, Vinaigrette is suppose to be a single component item! It's not suppose to come out in multiple components for assembly. So I ask him how can this be a vinaigrette and he says that the vinegar is the special secret vinegar. So now I get it. The only thing is that the oil is not olive oil! It's canola or corn oil. You can't make Greek Dressing without Olive Oil!!!! So then I turn my attention to the Salad and I see it's topped with Burger style Dill Pickles!! I'm Horror Stricken! No Greek Salad ever had pickles on it, last time I checked the Greek Salad rule book pickles were strictly forbidden on a Greek Salad, in fact I can't remember any salad I ever had that had pickles on it! So I immediately remove them and anything they were touching! I requested a list of ingredients and promptly rescued my salad. Which by the way the secret vinegar was REALLY GOOD! So thus the 1 star deduct, cause of the pickles on the salad. Really just a technicality. If they lose the salad and the green peas, add in cucumber which is MUST in a Greek salad they will have themselves a good salad. Next I have the Prime 15oz NY Strip. Was it Peter Luger's or Prime 112, NO! But then again it was 50-60 or 70 dollars like those other places. I think it was like 26 or 27 dollars and it was cooked to perfection. I asked for it not seasoned and with just a little Shine on it(Steak Butter). I think it's the best steak you're gonna get any where near there. Then I go to the bar at 9:00 and the place is closing up and the owner comes out and I start talking to him. Fellow Greek and super nice guy. I finish my scotch with him and head to my awaiting cab having a had a very enjoyable experience and meal. I highly recommend if you are in Johnson City to put this restaurant on your list, you won't be sorry. I plan on going back next time I'm in the area.

Every visit to the Peerless is unique. You might get an OK meal and service, or you might get a phenomenal meal and service, or any combination in between. Steaks are usually tender, chicken is either over-cooked or fantastic, and their salads are incredible.

I will say this is the best steak I had while in Johnson City, Luck us we got the new waiter I think it was his first night working the room unsupervised, and of course what did the restaurant do but fill up his section while the more experienced of the wait staff stood around and made comments on what he had to do and when. They had time to do that but not to lend a hand. That said the food was darn good and I will be back the food alone will bring me back just not on a Thursday night I will give it a try on say a Saturday or Friday night.

I tried to give this place a second chance. We made a reservation for 5 of us and they told us they had a room reserved for us. Well what we didn't realize is they meant a room for real, like the size of small bedroom that you walk into and all there is is the table. I guess some people would like the privacy but it seemed really creepy to me. There was a whole hallway of these rooms available to reserve. Once again, the food was seriously lacking. 4 out of the 5 of us ordered steaks & we all had to request steak sauce to put on them. If there was any seasoning on them at all we couldn't taste it. For a steak house, that's just unacceptable. This place has the potential to be a great old-school steak house! They just have to step it up and check out how the food is actually coming out of the window.

This is a place that is resting on its laurels. When it was a smaller place in the simple building with the big black steer outside it seemed better but perhaps my taste has just become more sophisticated. Dinner there tonight was very disappointing considering the price. The fried potato appetizer was little more than bar food. It had no seasoning, the fries, though ordered "crisp" were limp, soggy and grease filled' They were covered with half sautéed onions that only contributed to the soggy nature of the dish. The Greek salad was, well, you can make it if you look at a cook book. Again, no seasoning or flair. I had the 6 oz. filet. It was ordered medium rare, it came medium. After the first bite I decided it didn't ever merit a "send back". They claim to have high quality prime steaks but the one I had didn't live up to that claim. I've had much better cuts of meat at Logan's, for much less money. The vegetable of the day was a broccoli casserole highly recommended by the server. It wasn't that great. The cheese and broccoli were both over cooked. It sort of tasted like eating leftovers. I guess that is what happens when you microwave your sides. I would advise giving this place a pass.

On 2/25 a friend and I enjoyed seafood and prime rib dinners. Despite the restaurant dining room being filled to capacity, we were served promptly in the bar. The meal was one of the best I enjoyed in the Tri- Cities.

Nasty restuarant. Very out dated and semi snooty for no real reason. Staff were coming out taking pictures of me and my boyfriend while we were there. REALLY. How dumb. We will never go there again.

I always enjoy my steak at this restaurant. Other items don't really do it for me. Never a bad steak but always a "good" one.

I had great expectations given the other review, the online menus and a presonal recommendation from a friend who had eaten at the Knoxville Peerless. I orderded the Seven and Seven (A 7 ounce filet and a 7 ounce lobster tail). I also ordered a house salad. The salad was fine. I had Thousand Island dressing and it too was tasty. The meal was properly served right after the salad disappeared. It looked great. The steak was properly done, very tender, but totally tasteless. Maybe folks in this part of the country don't do seasonings, if so, pardon my Texan. The lobster was fine. Tender, and not dry. It came with melted butter. (melted, not clarified). I had noticed earlier that the butter that came with the bread was not particularly tasty, and guess what, the same butter came with the lobster. I think my meal would have been at least one grade better overall if the restaurant had used a good grade of butter, and clarified it for the lobster. The service and atmosphere were both above average.

Flavorless steak. Baked potato not fully done plus had a bad spot that flavored the whole potato. Big disappointment.

I have lived in this area for 16 years. I have visited this restaurant at least a dozen times and was not a fan. Not a place I would recommend. However, last weekend my sister and husband came to town and wanted to go there. we did. It was delightful! Food was good, service was great, atmosphere was okay. I will return. I'm a new fan!
